NiceZyme View of ENZYME: EC 1.1.3.39

Official Name
Nucleoside oxidase (H(2)O(2)-forming).
Reaction catalysed
Adenosine + 2 O(2) <=> 9-riburonosyladenine + 2 H(2)O(2)
Cofactor(s)
FAD; Heme.
Comment(s)
  • Other purine and pyrimidine nucleosides (as well as 2'-deoxynucleosides and arabinosides) are substrates, but ribose and nucleotides are not substrates.
  • The overall reaction takes place in two separate steps: (1) Adenosine + O(2) = 5'-dehydroadenosine + H(2)O(2). (2) 5'-dehydroadenosine + O(2) = 9-riburonosyladenine + H(2)O(2).
  • The 5'-dehydro nucleoside is being released from the enzyme to serve as substrate for the second reaction.
  • Differs from EC 1.1.3.28 as it produces hydrogen peroxide rather than water.
